# Physical therapy for runners

![Runner's lower legs mid-stride, running injury physical therapy in Farmers Branch](https://www.revenantpt.com/hs-fs/hubfs/running-physical-therapy-hero.jpg?width=1520&name=running-physical-therapy-hero.jpg)

Every time you build mileage, the same thing flares up. You rest, it calms down, you start again, and it comes right back. That's not bad luck, and it doesn't mean running is bad for you. It usually means your body doesn't have the capacity yet for what you're asking of it. We find out why, then build a body that can handle the miles.

## Running injuries we treat

### Knee pain

![Runner's knee absorbing load mid-stride](https://www.revenantpt.com/hs-fs/hubfs/runner-knee-pain.jpg?width=1520&name=runner-knee-pain.jpg)

Runner's knee, patellar tendinopathy and IT band pain. The knee usually takes the blame for what the hip and foot aren't doing.

### Achilles pain

![Calf raise loading the Achilles tendon for a runner](https://www.revenantpt.com/hs-fs/hubfs/runner-achilles-pain.jpg?width=1520&name=runner-achilles-pain.jpg)

Achilles tendinopathy and calf pain that shows up with speed work, hills or higher mileage. Tendons need progressive load, not just rest.

### Hip and groin pain

![Runner driving the knee forward, hip and groin in running](https://www.revenantpt.com/hs-fs/hubfs/runner-hip-groin-pain.jpg?width=1520&name=runner-hip-groin-pain.jpg)

Groin strains, hip flexor pain and deep hip pain that tightens up mid run. These often come from how the pelvis and trunk control each stride.

### Shin splints

Pain along the shin that builds with every run. It's usually a sign the lower leg is absorbing more load than it's ready for.

We also treat plantar fasciitis, stress reaction recovery, and hip and low back pain in runners.

## What happens in a running evaluation

![Movement assessment of a runner's foot position](https://www.revenantpt.com/hs-fs/hubfs/running-evaluation-movement-assessment.jpg?width=1520&name=running-evaluation-movement-assessment.jpg)

We don't start on a treadmill. There's more useful information in how you move as a whole than in a slow motion video of your stride. So we map out your movement patterns, test your coordination and capacity, and build a full picture of your movement profile.

You leave knowing why you're having symptoms, what's actually driving them, and a clear roadmap back to running. Treadmill work can come later, once we know what to look for.

## Why most running rehab falls short

![Running shoes next to a barbell, strength training for runners](https://www.revenantpt.com/hs-fs/hubfs/strength-training-for-runners.jpg?width=1520&name=strength-training-for-runners.jpg)

Most running rehab is too specific. It zeroes in on the sore spot and hands you a few exercises for it. But runners don't break down because one muscle is weak. They break down because the whole body can't handle the demand.

Runners need to strength train more, and train comprehensively. A more capable body can handle more miles, more speed and more race days. That's the goal here: not just getting you out of pain, but making you a more durable runner.

## One runner's story

A marathoner came in with a serious groin injury that kept him from racing. We rebuilt his strength and capacity from the ground up. Within 2 to 3 months he was back to marathon racing. He was strength training more, running less volume, and getting better results than before.

## Who this is for

First 5K to marathon, trail, ultra, Hyrox and triathlon. If running is part of how you stay sane, compete or stay healthy, and something keeps pulling you back, this is for you.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do I have to stop running?

It depends on how irritable your symptoms are. If pain only shows up during or after runs and settles by the next morning, you can usually keep running while we adjust volume and intensity. If it's changing how you run, making stairs or everyday movement painful, hurting at rest, or you need medication to get through it, we pull back first and rebuild before loading running again. Your evaluation tells us exactly where you fall.

### Do you do a treadmill gait analysis?

Not at first. How you move globally tells us more than how you run on a treadmill. Treadmill work can come later, once we know what we're looking for.

### How is this different from a running store gait analysis?

A running store looks at your stride to recommend shoes. We look at how your whole body moves and handles load, to find why you keep getting hurt.

### Do I need to strength train?

Yes. Comprehensive strength training is one of the most effective ways to make running injuries stop coming back. We build it around your running, not instead of it.

### Do you work with marathon and trail runners?

Yes, from first 5K to marathon, trail, ultra and Hyrox.

### Do you take insurance?

No. Revenant is cash-based and out-of-network, so every session is 60 minutes, one-on-one. Superbills are available on request.

Not a runner? See [everything we treat](https://www.revenantpt.com/what-we-treat?hsLang=en).
