Out-of-network PT · Farmers Branch

Out-of-network physical therapy, explained

If you've only ever used insurance for PT, paying out of pocket can feel like a gamble. It doesn't have to be. Here's how it works, what it costs, and how to tell if it's worth it for you.

The short version: you pay me directly, every session is 60 minutes one-on-one with a Doctor of Physical Therapy, and I can give you a superbill to submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement.

The basics

What out-of-network actually means

Revenant isn't contracted with insurance companies. That's the whole difference, and it changes more than the bill.

1

You pay the clinic directly

No copays, no surprise bills months later. You know what your care costs before you commit to it.

2

Your insurance doesn't run your care

The number of visits, how long they last and what we work on are decided by you and me, not by a plan's approval rules.

3

You can still use your benefits

If your plan has out-of-network benefits, I'll give you a superbill to submit. HSA and FSA cards work too.

Side by side

Out-of-network vs. in-network physical therapy

Both can help. They're built differently.

  Revenant (out-of-network) Typical in-network clinic
Time with your PT ✓  60 minutes, one-on-one, every visit ✕  Often shared with other patients and aides
Who you see ✓  The same Doctor of Physical Therapy every time ✕  Often a rotating cast
Who decides your plan ✓  You and me, based on your goal ✕  Partly your plan: visit limits, approvals
How many visits ✓  Fewer, because each one does more ✕  Often more, shorter visits
What you pay ✓  A clear program price, agreed upfront ✕  A copay or deductible every visit, plus bills later
Using your insurance ✓  Superbill on request for out-of-network benefits ✕  Billed directly by the clinic

The cost question

What it costs, and the math most people miss

I don't post prices, because the right plan depends on what's actually going on. At the end of your evaluation I'll recommend a program, usually 6 to 12 weeks, and tell you the exact cost before you commit. The discovery call is free.

1

Check your deductible

If you have a high-deductible plan, you're likely paying the full in-network rate until you hit it anyway.

2

Count the copays

A copay every visit, two or three visits a week, for months, adds up faster than people expect.

3

Count the visits

Short, shared sessions usually mean more of them. One-on-one hours usually mean fewer.

Using your insurance

How to get reimbursed

Many plans pay back part of out-of-network physical therapy. It depends entirely on your plan, so it's worth a five-minute call to find out before you start.

1

Call your insurance

Ask: Do I have out-of-network physical therapy benefits? What's my out-of-network deductible? What percentage do you reimburse? Is there a visit limit? Do I need a referral or prior authorization?

2

Pay at your visit

Card, HSA or FSA.

3

Ask me for a superbill

It lists your diagnosis and treatment codes, the document your insurance needs.

4

Submit it

Send it to your insurance. Any reimbursement goes straight to you.

Straight answer

Is it worth it?

For a lot of people, yes. Especially if you've already done a round of PT that didn't stick, you have a high deductible, or you want to get back to training, not just out of pain.

It's probably not the best fit if your plan covers PT with a low copay, you're happy with that model, and your goal is basic pain relief. I'd rather tell you that on the call than sell you something you don't need.

What patients say about paying out of pocket

5.0 ★★★★★ from 90+ Google reviews

“He doesn't accept insurance, and I'll admit the out-of-pocket cost gave me pause at first. But looking back, it was one of the best investments I've made in my health. The quality of care, individualized attention, and results were well worth every dollar.”

Maria S.
Knee replacement recovery

“I went to a chain PT place for 3-4 months prior to this and saw no progress. I came to Nevin and within 5 weeks, I saw exponential progress… If you are an active individual, you should only go to Nevin for your rehab.”

Akash P.
Tried a chain PT clinic first

“Revenant Physical Therapy is the 4th clinic that either me or my daughter has attended. Nevin is to date the best PT that we have had the opportunity to work with. He is the first PT that actually performed a ‘full body’ assessment in order to address the ‘whole solution.’”

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is out-of-network physical therapy worth it?

For most active people who want to get back to training, yes. You get 60 minutes one-on-one with a Doctor of Physical Therapy every visit, which usually means fewer visits overall. If your plan covers PT with a low copay and you only want basic pain relief, in-network may be the better fit.

Will my insurance reimburse me?

It depends on your plan. Many plans with out-of-network benefits pay back part of the cost once you meet your out-of-network deductible. Call your insurance before you start, and I'll give you a superbill to submit.

What is a superbill?

A superbill is an itemized receipt with your diagnosis and treatment codes. You submit it to your insurance to request out-of-network reimbursement, and any reimbursement is paid to you.

Can I use my HSA or FSA?

Yes. HSA and FSA cards are accepted for physical therapy at Revenant.

How much does it cost?

It depends on what you need. At the end of your evaluation I'll recommend a program built around your goal, usually 6 to 12 weeks, and tell you the exact cost before you commit. The discovery call is free.

Do I need a referral?

No. You don't need a referral to book. If we need one later, I'll handle coordinating it.

Why doesn't Revenant take insurance?

Being out-of-network is what lets every session be a full hour, one-on-one, with the same Doctor of Physical Therapy, and lets the plan follow your goal instead of a visit limit.
